Options Trading Championship: Group Champion

Finally, the result of the Options Trading Championship 2007 was released this afternoon at the Personal Wealth Forum and please put your hands together to welcome the champion from the Group event “The 4 Challengers”.

Over the past 1 week, there were countless rumour and speculation going around the net from Indonesia and Singapore stating how many percent the Indonesian team had achieved and how I had achieved 200 over percent portfolio growth to retain the title so on and so forth. I even heard someone mentioning the Taiwanese won it which I know is not true. Malaysia has been so quiet and no news whatsoever from them and that makes me wonder whether the champions comes from them.

Well, the fact is that I didn’t achieve 200%. Rumour sometime could kill if you believe in it too much, especially in stock trading.

However, the reliable source I got from Indonesia was true that Indonesia contenders won all the Individual category and yes, it happened that way. The winner achieved a 230% growth in portfolio which surpasses my record of 198%. Well done!

One thing that is within my expectation is that we won the Group Champion. Our team had been performing consistently well since day 2 and we managed to hold on to the tremendous challenge posted by the Indonesia to win the Group Champion which I wanted to win so much for my group member. This is my promise to them on day 1 to be able to go on stage and I’m glad to be able to fulfill my promise and we even gone 2 steps better to be the Champion!

Honestly speaking, I do feel a bit relief right now as initially, I had problem building up this team and I was rejected numerous time by many people. Of course I have to admit that I was a bit selective as well but when the deadline was almost due, I was so desperate in need of people that I even called up to beg them to join me.

2 weeks to the competition and I was unable to form a team, a proper team that would have faith in me to lead them to glory. Later, those who promised to join me backed out to join other team and my ex team members rejected my invitation again. No one responded to my recruitment offer in the forum and I was so stressed.

Then come on board my lucky charm, Malcolm, who has been my “The Challengers” team mate for the past 2 years. He was the first to say yes and that gave me the confident to build up a formidable team. Then, I called up Yi Leong, a very good friend who has yet to start trading and I remembered how I “framed and coaxed” him to join me. Then the setback came as the deadline for the OTC was due and fortunately he was able to enroll through back door strategy I taught him. Phew!!

I was unable to get the third member and I was supposed to be assigned a Top Challenger from Freely who initially was unable to have a team as well but he abandoned me also to join other team just before the competition officially kicked off. I requested for a girl to have some lady luck but I ended up with a Big guy, Bro Poh. Hehe…. But it turns to be a good choice as he surprised many of us with some very good trades. Cool! Oh ya, he is from Sarawak as well and I realise Sarawak produces good traders, isn’t it? Hmm… I’m from Miri, by the way. Still don’t get it??

We didn’t have a good day 1 but with some very good discussion and debates going around on day 2 and day 3, we managed to close some very good trades and achieved a final 47% portfolio growth to be the Champion. The 2nd comes a distance behind with less than 20% growth if I’m not mistaken and the 3rd achieved 7%.

Was it a great result in team event? Of course it is. Just imagine, growing 47% in just 3 nights only and it is a team effort. This is an exceptionally fantastic result.

I have to say thanks to my 3 members again namely, Malcolm, Yi Leong and Brother Poh for allowing me to lead you this time round and I believe all of us played a part in achieving this and this is not an individual glory and all of us should share the same limelight. If not because of you, I wouldn’t be able to achieve the kind of phenomenal results that we have gotten.

I look forward to working with all of you again in future and remember that all of you owe me a meal and if you don’t pay up soon, the market will punish you and when you start to wonder why is it so hard to win money in the market after OTC, you would realise that it’s because of you still have an outstanding meal which is due to me which you haven’t paid. Hehe….

I shall talk about more about the Personal Wealth Forum on the next post as it’s getting late now.

    Hey Leong,

Congrats for being a consistent winner!

And thanks for always reminding me on the importance of money management. I’ve recovered all my loses in OTC and doubled my portfolio a week after.

    Cheers & Congrats!

    Clarence

    Clarence,

Thanks for passing by. I saw you posted some impressive victories on the forum and I’m proud of you.

I’ve seen you grow and improve from last OTC and congrats for hanging on there and now you are rewarded.

Recovering your losses is good, but do remember that at the end of the day, only the way you recovered it that matters.

    Trade carefully, ya

    Hi Wei Ping,

I’m so proud of you as a Malaysian and be able to clinch the top spot for your team. Afterall, team spirit is important.

I’ve learnt so much from your trading sharing and i realise now that you promise to tell us the story about the Logitech V320 mouse on day 3…that’s wonderful learning for me as well!

Well, let’s learn together and hope to see you again!

    Thomas

    Stephen,

Congrats for being a winner as well at such a young age.

I believe you already have a great team now, just that you would need to have more faith in each other.

Hmmm.. I don’t know which newspaper you talked about but I’d never mentioned on placing 20% on each trade. Just that my threshold is 25% as well last year, exactly the same as this year.

If you look at my trade this year, only LOGI prompted me into using 22.5%. Other than that, all other trades were only around 4.5% to 15%.

I couldn’t remember last year but I remember only YHOO and BIDU that I’ve used to the limit (25%) based on latest portfolio size.

If you separated your trade equally on each trade, that is a bet and I don’t do that, even in competition.

Watch out my next, or perhaps next next post.

    Thomas,

Thanks for coming back again. Ha, in fact I have more to share on that day but I was limited to 5 minutes and I’ve not get used to speaking with so many people YET.

I believe you have many to learn from other great traders in Freely as well. I’m just doing what I’m doing in order to achieve what I want to achieve, that is consistent income.

Thanks!! I really hope that you were in my team earlier as I believe your experience and advise would have spurred to a better position in the Individual event.

All of the previous ” The 5 Challengers” members are my lucky charm!

Many congrats, Wei Ping, for achieving both the individual Grand Champion(2006) Team Champion(2007)!! How about forming a Sarawak Team in OTC 2008? Or you still prefer lady luck?

    Billy of Kuching 8D

  15. Wei Ping on November 13th, 2007

    Billy,

This time round we had 2 Sarawakian in the team. In fact, Kwong Poh is from Kuching, same hometown as you and Yi Leong is from KL.

I’m definitely interested in forming a Sarawak team for the future OTC. Just keep in touch, ya.

I believe you can be on top as well if you decide to take part in the competition. I wish you all the best.

    Hi Wei Ping,

Congratulations to you man! This year our team aim to win the group category using money management and analysis we learned from Dr in Bali but our analysis for 3 day gapping was not so good.

Next year we’ll try again to beat you ha ha.

Yeah team management is also a soft skill that we have to learn especially the team leader. Though it is difficult, the synergistic reward is so much more. Congrats again bro!

  19. Wei Ping on December 2nd, 2007

    Hai Liang,

Wow! You went to Bali! *wink wink*.

You team did great as well and I believe your team will go further in the next OTC.

My understanding towards gapping is that it is not only about analysis. You need to have a thorough understanding about money management, technical analysis, market expectation, current sector condition and a few more market sentiment indicators in order for you to win more from it although not consistent.

I wish you all the best and I’m looking forward to meeting you again in the next OTC

  20. Wei Ping on December 2nd, 2007

    Lawrence,

Thanks for it. Not making much from it anyway but the experience i gained and the atmosphere there were simply awesome.

Ya, you should form a team and come to have some fun and at the same time, make more money.

  21. Kenny Tran on December 3rd, 2007

What are you planning for next year Wei Ping? A hat-trick? :D

    Congrats!!!

  22. Wei Ping on December 3rd, 2007

    Kenny,

    Thanks for it.

I’m planning for something even more bigger next year. But definitely it’s not about winning or losing.

I wish you every trading success. Keep in touch, ya
